π§οΈπ STORM SAFE ON THE JOURNEY
β οΈ Troubles and hard times come. That isnβt a Bariatric thing, that is a βwe are aliveβ thing and I will be the first to admit that I have not always known how to be safe when the storms of life would rage around me. If I was to tell you the sheer number of things that have gone wrong lately it would be difficult to believe. My Nan, when she was with us, used to say βoh well bad things come in threeβsβ π³ Hands up if you have experienced times when they came in 12βs π₯΄ππ» And prior to my Bariatric surgery the way that I coped with stress, worry, anxiety, hurt, disappointment and things like that was to use food to dull my emotions.
Thankfully through a lot of work over the past few years I have learned different ways to cope when the Storms come!
From a Bariatric perspective my top 3 βοΈ Storm Ready Strategies βοΈ are
βοΈ1. Mindfulness - I know the situations that trigger me and I know what I will want to do in those situations so if I find myself in an unavoidable stormy season I ask myself questions when I am standing in front of the fridge or hanging out in the pantry! I ask myself things like βAm I hungry?β βAm I anxious so I am wanting to eat?β I also practise intentionally focusing my thoughts on things that I know will build me up!
βοΈ2. Awesome food options! In the stormy seasons of my life I make sure that I have things that are nutrient dense and tasty that I can grab to help me feel good about the food choices I am making! And if I am having intrusive thoughts about a food then I will have it and adjust the rest of my day to make room for that. That is kindness to myself.
βοΈ3. Movement - when I feel overwhelmed and anxious I find that getting out and moving my body is such a positive and positive empowering way to change my perspective! Often we cannot change what is happening but we can take back the power over how we respond to it!
